Until the 1960s, Polly Umrigar had the most Test runs (3,631) and hundreds (12) for India. Then came Sunil Gavaskar: by the time he retired, he had the most runs and hundreds in the world. India’s first truly legendary Test batter over a sustained period of time was, thus, an opener.

It has been nearly four decades since he played his last Test match, but Gavaskar still has the most Test runs as among Indian openers. This, despite his highest score of 236 not out coming from down the order.
