The 1996 World Cup ended up being one of Sri Lanka's finest moments in their cricketing history. It remains their only ODI World Cup title, and came as they beat Australia in the final, after the Australians had refused to play any matches in Sri Lanka citing security concerns.

On the eve of the tournament, as per the ICC rankings, only one Sri Lankan bowler was in the top 25 in the world – he sat in 12th place. The top 10 had three Australians (in second, third and fourth), and two players each from West Indies, South Africa and India. There was one representative from defending champions Pakistan, and he sat in first place, with 784 rating points.
