At Leeds in 1930, Don Bradman reached his hundred before lunch, double hundred before tea, and triple hundred by stumps. It remains the ultimate benchmark of sustained scoring, but Bradman did not quite break Jack Gregory’s record for the fastest Test hundred at that point.

Gregory’s record stood until the late 1980s, when Viv Richards pulverised the English attack to beat that by 11 balls. Misbah-ul-Haq equalled Richards’s record in the 2010s, only for Brendon McCullum to beat both men by a one-ball margin.

While the 50-ball mark was breached in ODIs in the 20th century, it continues to remain elusive in Test cricket.
