For a long time, wicketkeepers used to stand up in their position behind their stumps, bending forward from their waist. Hanson “Sammy” Carter, who played Tests for Australia from 1907 to 1921, is usually credited as the wicketkeeper who made sitting on the haunches mainstream: that is what we see today. Carter was also one of the pioneers of the scoop shot towards fine-leg.
