The 1894/95 Ashes in Australia was one of the early great Test series, and was followed keenly back in England. The series began in spectacular fashion in Sydney, where Australia enforced the follow-on but England still won. The second Test, at Melbourne, started in dramatic fashion when Arthur Conningham dismissed visiting opener Archie MacLaren with the first ball. This was the first instance of a bowler striking with the first ball of a Test.

It was nearly four decades before someone took a wicket off the first ball of a series. The Australia leg of England’s 1932/33 tour is remembered for Bodyline. England also visited New Zealand on that tour, where they lost a wicket off the first ball of the Test series. There was another instance in the 1930s, but not again before the early 1990s.
