Five-wicket hauls are, in a way, more special than centuries: the Laws of Cricket make it impossible for two five-fors to take place in the same team innings. If a bowler takes six, it will remain the only five-wicket haul of the innings.

The five-wicket haul is, thus, a rare feat. Muttiah Muralidaran did get it an absurd 67 times. However, the next-best slot is shared by Shane Warne and R Ashwin, who have 37 apiece, and only four others have 30 five-fors. As an inevitable result, several bowlers – some of them specialists – went through their Test careers without ever taking five wickets in an innings. This includes quite a few who have gone to take 50 Test wickets and four wickets in an innings, but never that fifth scalp.
