“Aye, but whoever does will be bloody tired,” Fred Trueman had famously responded when asked whether anyone would break his world record of 307 Test wickets. The record did not last. Lance Gibbs went past him, then Dennis Lillee, then Ian Botham. The next man, Richard Hadlee, also became the first to 400 Test wickets. Hadlee retired with 431, but was overtaken by Kapil Dev in 1994. In the 21st century, Courtney Walsh stretched that to 519.

The 2000s were characterised by, among other things, a tussle between Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralidaran as both raced for the top of the wickets chart. They still occupy the top two spots, with James Anderson a close third, as the 400-wicket club continues to grow.
