The Faulkner School of Cricket in London, set up and run by the legendary South African cricketer Aubrey Faulkner in 1925, can be called the first bona-fide cricket academy. Until the 1980s, however, international cricket teams seldom had bona-fide coaches: the most they had was the manager: conducting net sessions were as much a part of their job description as handing out allowances to the cricketers.

Professional cricket has come a long way since then. These days, teams – dometic, international, and franchise – travel with full-fledged coaching staff, including roles that would have been considered unthinkable in another era. Most of these roles are filled by former cricketers.
