Ahead of the 1968 Ashes Test match, Bernie Coleman, a South London publican who had recently joined the club committee, gave the amateurs’ dressing-room at The Oval “a fresh coat of paint”, turned it into a hospitality tent, and sold it to XS Insurance as a box. Gubby Allen, the supremo of English cricket of the time and the epitome of everything old-school, was horrified: “What’s that sign? We can’t have that.” Coleman’s response was brief: “That, Mr Allen, is £500, and we’re skint.”
