It was not until 1864 that overarm bowling finally became legalised. That brought (among other factors) serious pace into the equation. Over time, there evolved a breed of bowlers who could beat batters for sheer pace. As the speed gun came into being (and became more and more sophisticated), viewers and commentators often made a note of the pace of the bowler.
