In the Lord’s Test of 2001, Australia bowled out England for 187 and 227 and won by eight wickets. Glenn McGrath took eight wickets in the Test. Jason Gillespie got five in the second innings. Mark Waugh eased to a sublime hundred. Adam Gilchrist bludgeoned a 121-ball 90. But there was something else to celebrate for the Australians as well. As per norm, the Australians scribbled the new entries (Mark Waugh, McGrath, Gillespie) on paper and glued them to the Lord’s Honours Board (they traditionally stay there until the names are painted).

However, they noticed an unusual entry at the vacant bottom right of the overseas bowlers’ Honours Board. It read MARK WAUGH 158 CATCHES WORLD RECORD. Mark Waugh had indeed caught Darren Gough at second slip off Gillespie to go past Mark Taylor’s world record of 157 Test catches as an outfielder.

It got everyone curious, for the Honours Board celebrates batting and bowling individual feats, not fielding careers. Then Mark Waugh sheepishly admitted, “well, no one else would have done it.”
