The first of Don Bradman’s two triple hundreds, at Headingley in 1930, was a truly exceptional innings. He reached his hundred before lunch, double hundred before tea, and triple hundred by stumps (though he did not get a hundred runs in the final session). Nearly a century later, that innings remains aultimate benchmark of sustained scoring. Despite that, however, Bradman did not quite break Jack Gregory’s record for the fastest Test hundred at that point.

Gregory’s record stood until the late 1980s at St John’s, when local hero Viv Richards pulverised the English attack to beat that by 11 balls. The record was equalled but not beaten ... until Brendon McCullum decided to break it, that too in his farewell Test match. However, the 50-ball mark continues to remain elusive in Test cricket.
