The early Indian Test sides had quality bowlers of pace, but that trend stopped after Independence. There a dearth of fast bowlers who could toil on the flat wickets in domestic cricket and rise through the ranks. At the same time, India had quality spinners, not standalone one-off names but some great names.

It was not until the rise of Kapil Dev in the late 1970s that India had a proper pace attack. The 1983 World Cup might have been won by the seamers, but Javagal Srinath, the next bowler of genuine pace, did not arrive until the 1990s. Like many others, Srinath had honed his skills at the MRF Pace Academy.
