India have announced their 15-member squad for their 2025 Asia Cup campaign, which begins on September 10 in the UAE.
Shubman Gill named India vice-captain for Asia Cup
Reports emerged casting doubt over the fitness of Suryakumar Yadav, who flew to England in June for sports hernia treatment. However, he has been cleared for fitness and is ready to captain India in the tournament. Shubman Gill has been named his deputy.
Sanju Samson, who entered the home series against England in January-February with three centuries in five innings as an opener, managed just 51 runs across the five T20Is. Selectors have kept their faith in him, and he is likely to accompany Abhishek Sharma at the top. Tilak Varma, who scored back-to-back T20I centuries against South Africa in November, also earns a spot. In his recent County Championship stint for Hampshire, Varma scored 358 runs at 59.66 in four matches, including two hundreds and a fifty.
Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel are among India's pack of all-rounders. Varun Chakravarthy was one of the few no-brainer selections - no Full Member bowler has taken more wickets than his 31 scalps at an average of 11.25 and economy of 7.58 since his comeback to the team in November after a three-year hiatus. Kuldeep Yadav is another first-choice spinner India will head into the tournament with.
There were conflicting reports over Jasprit Bumrah’s availability due to workload management. He has been declared fit for the tournament. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana will be the lead fast bowlers for India.
Mohammed Shami, who made his comeback during the England T20Is after a long injury layoff, played the Champions Trophy but has been out of India’s squad since and is omitted this time as well.
India will start their campaign with the first match against Group A rivals the United Arab Emirates on September 10. Find the full India Asia Cup schedule here.
