Hugh Weibgen of the Bulls celebrates victory during the One Day Cup match between Queensland and Western Australia at Allan Border Field, on September 21, 2025, in Brisbane, Australia

Australia's Under-19 World Cup-winning captain, Hugh Weibgen, struck his maiden List A century to help Queensland beat Western Australia in the One-Day Cup on Sunday (September 21).

Weibgen helps Queensland pull off their second-highest chase

Weibgen entered the crease with Queensland struggling at 38-4 in their pursuit of 322. First, with Lachlan Hearne, he stitched a 68-run partnership for the fifth wicket to ease the nerves. Hearne’s dismissal for 42 saw the chasing team slip to 106-5.

Then came the most decisive stand of the match, a 77-ball 108 between Weibgen and Jack Wildermuth. The latter was the aggressor in the partnership, contributing 74 off 49 balls including five fours and six sixes. Michael Neser also played a blazing cameo (41 off 23) from No.8, stitching another fifty-run partnership (71 off 40) with the 20-year-old Weibgen. The youngster made sure to stay put until the end, getting Queensland over the line with a 94-ball 115 not out, hitting nine fours and five sixes.

Queensland won with two wickets and five balls remaining, recording their second-highest successful run-chase. Their record remains the chase of 399 against Tasmania in 2014. That also is, to date, the second-highest successful chase in List A cricket history.

Earlier in the match, Joel Curtis (116) and Sam Whiteman (83) helped Western Australia post 321-9, with Mitchell Swepson returning standout figures of 4-52 for Queensland.

      Who is Hugh Weibgen?

This was Weibgen’s first List A ton, coming in only his second match, following his debut for Queensland just four days ago. His unbeaten 115 is also the highest score by a Queensland No.6 in List A Cricket, surpassing Craig Philipson's 100 against New South Wales in 2010.

Last year, he led Australia to victory in the Under-19 World Cup, finishing with 304 runs at an average of 50.66, including a score of 120 against England U19. His T20 debut came earlier in January when he played six matches for the BBL 2024-25 champions, Sydney Thunder. However, his performance there left much to be desired, as he managed just 46 runs at an average of 11.50 and a strike rate of 92.00. He is yet to make his first-class debut.

This July, Weibgen impressed in club cricket in the UK, scoring a century for Sunbury CC against Spencer CC, which counted England Test seamer Gus Atkinson among their XI on the day.
