Cameron Green of Australia bats during day four of the Second Test match in the series between Australia and West Indies at The Gabba on January 28, 2024 in Brisbane, Australia

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green justified Gloucestershire’s signing with a match-winning performance on a nail-biting final day (May 19) against Kent in the County Championship.

Green was signed up by Gloucestershire to play five matches in the County Championship this season, a deal funded by a donation from an unnamed member of the club.

"This deal would not have been possible without a significant donation from a Member of the Club, and we are incredibly grateful for his generosity, which has enabled us to do this deal without going over the playing budget," revealed Gloucestershire Cricket chair Peter Matthews.

In Gloucestershire’s third match of the season against Kent at Canterbury – also Green’s first first-class game in 13 months after a long injury layoff – he marked his return in style with 112 off 188 balls.

Despite the high of his comeback century, a slump followed as Green posted four back-to-back single-digit scores. However, he rediscovered form against the same opponent, Kent, registering another century to reignite his campaign.

Green rescues Gloucestershire twice after top-order collapses

Gloucestershire slumped to 139-4 in reply to Kent’s 424, but Green orchestrated a turnaround with a 184-ball 128, sharing a 222-run fifth-wicket stand with James Bracey, who scored 127 off 192. Both struck 17 fours and a six each, propelling Gloucestershire to a 92-run first-innings lead. Kent managed 253 in their second innings, setting up a target of 162.

Gloucestershire's top order collapsed again – losing four wickets for 57 – worse than their first innings collapse. Green, batting at No. 5, anchored one end while wickets fell at the other. With seven down and 24 still needed, he held his nerve, sealing the win with an unbeaten 67 off 90, hitting six fours and a six.

Green’s match-winning performances came after his recall to Australia’s Test squad for the World Test Championship final against South Africa in June. His last Test appearance was against New Zealand in January 2024. His Gloucestershire stint will conclude with a match against Northamptonshire starting May 23.
