Former India Test opener Mayank Agarwal had a County Championship debut to forget, falling for a golden duck.
Mayank Agarwal falls for golden duck on County Championship debut
In a rain-affected round of Championship fixtures, Somerset were sent in to bat by Yorkshire on day one (September 8) at Taunton. Constant interruptions meant their innings dragged on until day three, when they declared at 441-6. Tom Abell made 130, while Tom Kohler-Cadmore (76), James Rew (54) and Lewis Goldsworthy (65) all made half-centuries.
Yorkshire were 17-0 at stumps, and resumed their innings on day four (September 11) with openers Adam Lyth and Finlay Bean in the middle. In the sixth over of the innings, Lewis Gregory drew an outside edge from Bean through to keeper Rew, bringing India batter Mayank Agarwal to the middle.
On the first ball he faced, Agarwal poked at a delivery outside off stump, nicking off to third slip where Abell took a straightforward catch.
The 34-year-old, who has 21 Tests to his name, signed for Yorkshire ahead of this match and will remain with the club for the rest of the Championship season. This is his first stint in English county cricket. While Agarwal has not retired from international cricket, his last Test came in 2022, and the chances of a recall are minimal, given the options India have at their disposal.
The game moved quickly after his dismissal. Just four balls later, James Wharton was bowled by Josh Davey. Two overs after that, Davey got the big wicket of Yorkshire skipper Jonny Bairstow for two. Ben Green and Jack Leach then chipped in with a wicket apiece, reducing Yorkshire to 57-6 before rain first forced the players off, and subsequently an early lunch break. There is unlikely to be enough time for a result in this match.
