Watch: Worcestershire’s Adam Hose was pinned plumb in front against Surrey in the County Championship - so plumb that he was already headed for the dressing room as the umpire raised his finger!
The Pears captain came in with his side in a bit of trouble at 77-4, and looked to set his stall out to aid in a rebuild. Caution would prove his undoing, however. He had made his way to nine from 29 balls when he offered no shot to an incoming Jordan Clark delivery and was struck on the pad.
Surrey’s fielders behind the wicket appealed as Clark tore off in celebration, not feeling the need to wait for the umpire’s decision. Hose too was in no mood to complete the formalities, beginning his trudge off before the finger went up.
Surrey, second in the Division One table and aiming for a fourth consecutive title, soon had Worcestershire, bottom, six down. The current round of County Championship fixtures is being played with a Kookaburra ball to better prepare England’s cricketers for overseas conditions.
While county cricket usually takes a backseat when the international summer starts, this round is a high-interest one, with Jacob Bethell and Jofra Archer each making long-awaited returns as they aim to stake their Test claims, and India white-ball stars Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan making their competition debuts.
