Beyers Swanepoel fielding for Worcestershire in the County Championship

South African all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel is facing a career crossroads after Cricket South Africa denied his No-Objection Certificate for his county cricket stint.

The decision from CSA came after Swanepoel walked out on his domestic team, Lions, during their One Day Cup final against Titans last week in order to fly to England. Swanepoel had a contract to play for Worcestershire in the County Championship, which starts tomorrow (April 3), but that deal is now on hold after his NOC was denied. He will also undergo disciplinary proceedings in South Africa having been charged with bringing the game into disrepute.

The decision to leave mid-final has thrown Swanepoel's career into crisis, depending on the outcomes of the disciplinary proceedings, which are being levied against him by both CSA and Titans. It is unlikely that CSA will grant Swanepoel's NOC to allow him to play county cricket this year, meaning he will have to forgoe his South African domestic career in order to fulfil his stint with Worcestershire.

The Swanepoel saga: From Johannesburg to New Road and back

Swanepoel left the field in the CSA One Day Cup final with eight overs to go, having already taken 3-44 in the chase. Lions went on to lose the game, and reportedly had no knowledge that Swanepoel had left in order to catch a flight to England. His decision to leave was made despite having not obtained a signed-off NOC from CSA, and with a week still left before the start of the County Championship. Swanepoel played for Kent in the 2025 county season, but signed for Worcestershire over the winter.

Lions reportedly had no knowledge of Swanepoel's deal before he left the field, but he had already bowled his quota of 10 overs. Lions Head coach Russell Domingo will coach Hampshire this year, and was also not at the final, but had stated his travel plans in advance of the match.

The decision from CSA to pursue disciplinary action against Swanepoel comes a day before the start of the 2026 County Championship. It means that Worcestershire, who were relegated from Division One last year, will be without one of their two overseas players.

Worcestershire Director of Cricket Ashley Giles, told the BBC that the decision was “out of their hands”. “I can say there was no pressure on our side on Beyers' arrival in the country at that time, or taking those steps,” Giles said. “People make mistakes. Beyers is a good man, a good lad. He's made an error in this case and we're trying to work our way through it.”

To fill Swanepoel's spot, Worcestershire announced that they have signed Oliver Hanon-Dalby on a 14-day loan from Warwickshire for the opening round of the County Championship.

“While the circumstances surrounding this move are not ideal, it was important for us to bring in someone who could settle quickly, contribute immediately and provide a genuine threat with the ball in the opening stages of the season.”

Swanepoel is expected to return to South Africa for the disciplinary proceedings against him.
