The ECB have started a trial for a new player replacement system during the 2026 County Championship: here are all the players subbed in and out due to injury and illness so far.

Former England Test batter Tom Westley became the first player in the County Championship to be subbed out through the player replacement trial, with all-rounder Noah Thain replacing him. Thain, however, wasn’t allowed to bowl in the game as the substitution system allows only a like-for-like replacement.

Three matches in the second round, across both divisions, saw two replacements each being made, with Somerset and Yorkshire replacing two of their players, while Glamorgan and Nottinghamshire made one sub each in their round two encounter at Trent Bridge.

While earlier substitutions were permitted only in case of concussion or an international call-up, the new regulations include “injury, illness or a significant life event”. The ECB have explained that “there is no set definition of ‘significant life event'," which could be "either expected or unexpected events that require a player to miss some or all of a match they are playing in. Expected events could include attending the birth of a child, for example, while an unexpected event could include the sudden illness of a family member, among many other examples.”
