Dan Lawrence produced a career-best effort for Surrey in their County Championship game against Hampshire.

Dan Lawrence hits maiden first-class double hundred to power Surrey to 421

The England batter, who last played international cricket in 2024, was largely the lone fighter for a star-studded Surrey side at The Oval. Batting at No.4, Lawrence slammed a career-best 218 off 190 balls, featuring 31 fours and five sixes, to take the side to a first-innings total of 421.

Ollie Pope played a strong hand with a 76 off 103, and added quick 255 runs off 222 balls for the fourth wicket with Lawrence. The rest of the Surrey batters couldn’t hang on with Lawrence, adding just 68 more runs for the remaining six wickets, with the second new ball also playing its part.

After being put into bat, the top three of Rory Burns, Dom Sibley and Will Jacks were back in the hut in 32 overs when Pope and Lawrence joined hands with 98 on the board. After the duo’s rapid stand, Sam Curran tried to maintain the momentum but fell for a 16-ball 20. His brother, Tom, followed him soon after, with the team eventually going from 390-4 to 410-8.

Lawrence was the ninth wicket to fall, with Surrey finishing their innings at 421. He had hit an unbeaten 94 off 47 against Hampshire just three days ago in the T20 Blast in a steep and unsuccessful 216-run chase.

Lawrence's previous best first-class knock of 178 came against Durham in the last county season. He scored those runs off 149 balls, and hit 19 fours and four sixes. Dom Sibley had slammed a triple hundred in the game as Surrey hit a record 820-9.

Lawrence had received his maiden Test call-up for the 2021 tour of Sri Lanka, and hit a 73 on Test debut, adding 173 runs with double centurion Joe Root. But he had a largely sub-par tour of India that followed, with a top score of 50. After being first dropped in 2022, he was recalled for a home series against Sri Lanka in 2024 and played at the top of the order under Brendon McCullum, but managed a top score of 35 in three matches. Overall, he scored 671 runs in 14 matches at 26.84, with three fifties and a top score of 91 against West Indies in Bridgetown.
