After he failed the concussion test, Surrey had to replace Gus Atkinson with a concussion substitute in the ongoing County Championship game.
Gus Atkinson suffers concussion after being hit by Josh Tongue
Riding on Joe Clarke’s 129 and Jack Haynes’ 82, Nottinghamshire had finished day one at Trent Bridge on 317-7. On the second morning, they pushed that total to 415 even as Dan Worrall finished with 6-73 on his comeback match in the County Championship.
Dom Sibley (77) and Dan Lawrence (104) led the Surrey response. Atkinson, having taken 1-80 earlier in the match, joined Adam Thomas at this point, with Surrey on 305-5.
They pushed the score closer to Nottinghamshire’s first-innings total when Josh Tongue hit Atkinson on the head with a bouncer. In his next over, Tongue hit Atkinson again – this time forcing him to retire hurt, for 27. The pair had put on 52.
As Thomas (54) got to his half-century, Atkinson failed the concussion test. Surrey used Reece Topley as a full substitute for him. As per the Playing Conditions, Topley will be eligible to both bat and bowl in the match. It is worth a mention that the 2026 County Championship had marked Topley’s return to red-ball cricket after four years.
At 433-9, Topley emerged as the No.12 batter (the last man). He had Ollie Pope, who had dropped to No.10, as partner. Topley swung his bat to hit a nine-ball 12 with two fours before Liam Patterson-White (4-135) claimed him. Tongue, too, finished with 4-89. Surrey’s eventual total of 449 gave them a 34-run lead.
