Middlesex club captain Leus du Plooy will be unavailable for selection for the rest of the season following an administrative blunder over his decision to re-commit to South Africa.
As well as the club's remaining County Championship fixture, du Plooy will miss the One Day Cup final later this month – the first List A final Middlesex have qualified for since 1990.
The middle-order batter had played county cricket for Derbyshire for five seasons before switching over to Middlesex in 2024. Born in South Africa, du Plooy qualifies as a local player as he has a Hungarian passport, and has previously expressed ambitions to play for England.
However, on Saturday [September, 5] morning, the club announced that he would be leaving at the end of the season, a year earlier than his contracted period to explore the possibility of representing South Africa. That would have meant Middlesex would need to register him as an overseas player for the final year of his contract.
However, in an embarassing administrative error, the club were unaware when announcing du Plooy's departure that his declaration automatically made him ineligible to continue playing as a local player for the rest of the 2026 season. Middlesex had a vacant spot in their squad for an overseas player, but were not aware of the change to du Plooy's status until after the deadline for registering overseas players for the 2026 season, which passed on Sunday [September 6].

In a statement released by the club on Tuesday, they said they remain in discussions with the ECB and PCA around Du Plooy's availability. However, he was not named in the playing XI for their Championship fixture against Durham, which began today. Max Holden has instead stepped in as captain.
The statement read: "Last week, following an article in the press, the Club confirmed that Leus had declared his intention to pursue an opportunity to play international cricket for South Africa. The Club has now been made aware that, under ECB regulations, a player who has declared an intention to play for another country is classified as an overseas player for domestic cricket purposes.
"As a result, Leus is required to be registered as an overseas player in order to continue playing for Middlesex. The deadline for the registration of overseas players for the 2026 season was Sunday, 6 September, meaning that it is now not possible for the Club to register Leus and select him for the remainder of the season."
