Eighteen-year-old batting prodigy Thomas Rew scored his maiden County Championship century for Somerset today (June 14), in the third first-class match of his career.
Playing for Somerset alongside older brother James in their fixture against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, Rew stepped out for only his second Championship outing. He had made his Championship debut in May this year against Yorkshire, having previously been unavailable due to his school exams. He had also played a first-class fixture for England Lions against Australia A over the winter.
At Trent Bridge, having made his maiden first-class half-century in the first innings, Rew went even better in the second. After Somerset were reduced to 106-4, Rew came to join his brother in the middle, who has been released from England's Test squad to play the fixture. Together, the Rews put on 68 runs before James was caught behind for 50.
Thomas, however, stayed firm, hitting seven fours and three sixes as he reached three figures off his 135th ball at the crease. Having reached the milestone, Rew accelerated, hitting three sixes in eight balls as Somerset put any prospect of Nottinghamshire chasing down a fourth-innings target out of sight.
Thomas Rew continues rapid rise
Thomas Rew's stocks have risen rapidly over the winter. He was included in England's Lions squad over the winter, and got his first franchise contract when he was signed to Paarl Royals. While his appearances for Somerset in whites have been fleeting so far this summer, he has been a regular in their T20 Blast side, with a top score of 27 from six outings.
He also captained England U19s over the winter in their World Cup campaign which saw them beaten by India in the final. He was also named in the England Lions squad which played South Africa in three 50-over games earlier this month, but did not make the final XI.
