Thomas Rew has been in sensational form against India Under-19, bringing up his fourth fifty of the tour in the second Test at Chelmsford.
The younger brother of James Rew, the youngest Englishman to score 10 first-class tons since Denis Compton in 1939, has been making waves of his own. In the recent Under-19 series against India, Thomas has made a combined 418 runs across the one-day and Test series, including a 79-ball 59 on the first day of the second Test.
Thomas Rew continues his form against India
The 17-year-old began by scoring five in the first of five ODIs against India, before smashing 131 in 89 balls with six sixes in the next. In the run chase of 291, the Lions were struggling at 47-3, before Thomas and Rocky Flintoff, Andrew Flintoff's son, anchored the innings. Thomas brought up his hundred in just 73 balls, the fastest Under-19 hundred for England.
He made 76, 19 and 49* in the remaining three games, ending the series with 280 runs at 93.33. Only Vaibhav Suryavanshi made more runs than him, as the two emerged as the biggest positives for their respective sides. India clinched the series 3-2.
Thomas continued to score runs in the four-day game as well, bringing up his second Youth Test fifty at Beckenham. The Lions had to chase 350 in the first game, but escaped with a draw courtesy of Hamza Shaikh’s hundred, along with fifties from Thomas (50 in 35) and Ben Mayes (51 in 82).
In the ongoing second Test, which began on Sunday (July 20), England, batting first, were struggling at 80-5, before Rew scored 59 with eight fours and a six. It ensured his side ended day one on a respectable 229-7.
Thomas has made his T20 Blast debut for Somerset this season, but has only managed 18 runs in three innings.
