St Lucia Kings and Guyana Amazon Warriors faced off in Qualifier 1 of this year's Caribbean Premier League, at the Providence Stadium. St Lucia captain David Wiese put Guyana in, but Ben McDermott ensured they made a solid start.

There was a wobble through the middle as Shamarh Brooks, Shimron Hetmyer, Hassan Khan and Moeen Ali all fell cheaply as they slid from 83-2 to 107-6. Dwaine Pretorius (17 off 8) and Romario Shepherd (21 off 8) then helped pull them back up to 157. The Kings' standout bowler was left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.
St Lucia were three down early in their chase as Tim Seifert, Johnson Charles and Ackeem Auguste all fell for single-digit scores. Immediately after the Powerplay, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie knocked over Roston Chase and Tim David off consecutive deliveries, reducing the defending champions to 40-5.

Motie went on to take the wickets of Wiese and Khary Pierre, finishing with 4-30 from his four overs. In Guyana's previous fixture against the Barbados Royals, he had taken 5-21 (although four of his wickets were the bottom five batters).
In this fixture, after Motie's first two wickets, the Kings went from 40-5 to 48-7. Pierre kept hopes of an improbable chase alive but he fell after scoring his maiden T20 fifty off 28 balls. Tymal Mills gave Guyana a scare with 30 off 18, but St Lucia eventually folded for 143, giving Guyana a 14-run win.
Why is Motie not playing the India Tests?
Until recently, Motie had been a regular in the West Indies Test team. He last played on their tour of Pakistan this January, taking seven wickets at 25.71 despite a couple of extreme spin-friendly surfaces. Motie was left out for the home series against Australia which kicked off their 2025-27 WTC campaign, and has not been picked for the upcoming tour of India either.
"The selection group has opted to rest Gudakesh Motie for this red-ball series given the demands of the upcoming limited overs schedule, the highlight being the ICC T20 World Cup in February and March of next year," read Cricket West Indies' press release for the squad announcement.
