In the second Duleep Trophy semi-final on Sunday (September 7), Central Zone narrowly missed breaking a little-known Indian first-class record.
600 with no centuries: Central Zone fall just short of Indian first-class record
Central Zone fielded first on day one (September 4), after West Zone captain Shardul Thakur won the toss and chose to bat. West managed 438, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad's 184 that dragged them out of danger from 10-2. Tanush Kotian (76) and Thakur (64) also scored half-centuries, from No.7 and No.8 respectively.
Central then resolutely went about their task of taking a first-innings lead, which would secure passage to the final in case of a draw. Openers Ayush Pandey (40) and Danish Malewar (76) put on 67 in 17.5 overs. No.3 Shubham Sharma, and captain Rajat Patidar at No.4, took opposite approaches.
Patidar scored 77 off just 84 balls, while Sharma made sure he occupied the crease for 241 balls. He was run out on day three, four short of a century. The lower-order also stepped up to the plate as wicketkeeper Upendra Yadav scored 87, left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey contributed with 75 and off-spinner Saransh Jain remained unbeaten on 63.
They were bowled out on day four for exactly 600, a first-innings lead of 162 runs. There were six half-centurions in the innings, but no batter got to a triple-digit score. Sharma was closest with his 96.
This is only the fifth time in the history of first-class cricket that a team has made 600 runs without a single batter scoring a century. The record on Indian soil is Madhya Pradesh's 605 against Haryana in Rajnandgaon in 1998-99. Opener Jai Prakash Yadav top-scored with 90, as Chandraprakash Sahu (60), Chandrakant Pandit (71), Ashraf Raja Ali (68) and Manish Majiithia (62) also made half-centuries. They were helped by 47 extras.
The world record is Surrey's 671-9 declared against Kent in 2022. Ollie Pope's 96 was the highest as Ben Foakes (91) and Jamie Overton (93) were also dismissed in the 90s. Ryan Patel, Sam Curran, Colin de Grandhomme and Jordan Clark all crossed 50 as well.
