England batsman Jamie Smith hits out for six runs during day three of the Second Test Match between England and India at Edgbaston on July 04, 2025 in Birmingham, England

England’s Jamie Smith matched the world record for fastest to 1,000 Test runs as a wicketkeeper during day two of the Lord’s Test against India.

England captain Ben Stokes added just five runs to his overnight 39 before being clean bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. At 260-5, in walked Jamie Smith – England’s standout performer in their heavy Edgbaston defeat, their first Test loss to India at the venue. Needing three runs to reach 1,000 Test runs after making his debut in July last year, Smith achieved the milestone emphatically: he crunched a four off Mohammed Siraj on the first ball of the 87th over of England’s first innings.

Arriving at the crease with England reeling at 84-5 at Edgbaston, Smith emerged as a strong contender to break England's century-old record for fastest Test hundred. He ultimately reached triple figures in 80 balls – the joint-third fastest for England.

His unbeaten 184 off 207 deliveries also set a new national record for the highest Test score by a wicketkeeper, surpassing Alec Stewart’s 173 against New Zealand at Auckland (1997). In the fourth innings, his 88 off 99 balls stood as England’s only significant contribution in their daunting chase of 608 – a match they eventually lost by 336 runs.

Jamie Smith equals Quinton de Kock's world record

Smith has now equalled South Africa's Quinton de Kock, who reached 1,000 Test runs as a wicketkeeper in 21 innings. The previous English record holder was Jonny Bairstow, who took one more innings than Smith and remains tied with Sri Lanka's Dinesh Chandimal (both 22 innings).

Kumar Sangakkara and AB de Villiers jointly hold the third-fastest mark (23 innings), while the West Indies' Jeff Dujon record stands at 24 innings (fourth-fastest). New Zealand's BJ Watling, Tom Blundell and England's Les Ames, having all achieved the landmark in 25 innings, jointly hold the fifth place.
