Jamie Smith was unbeaten on 184* at the end of England's first innings against India at Edgbaston. Here's every record he broke in his mammoth knock.
Smith came in to face a hat-trick ball from Mohammed Siraj, with Joe Root and Ben Stokes having been dismissed in the second over of day three. He started as he would continue, however, drilling the delivery through mid off for four. From there, he built a huge partnership with Harry Brook, and rocketed towards a century before the lunch interval. He briefly threatened Gilbert Jessop's fabled record of the fastest Test century by an England player, but narrowly missed it by four balls, bringing up his second Test hundred off 80 deliveries. It drew him level with Harry Brook for the third-fastest Test century by an England player.

While both Brook and Smith's rate of scoring calmed down somewhat after the Lunch break, they continued to pile on the runs. They surpassed a triple-century stand later in the day, recording England's 11th stand of more than 300 on home soil. It was also England's third-highest partnership in a men's Test match against India, with Brook falling when they were five runs short of Graham Gooch and Alan Lamb's 308-run stand at Lord's in 1990. They also fell well short of England's highest-ever sixth wicket partnership, which still belongs to the 399 runs put on by Stokes and Jonny Bairstow in Cape Town in 2016, with Brook and Smith ending in second place.

Despite losing his middle-order partner and the tail spiraling into a collapse with him at the other end, Smith continued to reach new heights. As he passed through the 170s, he became the holder of two significant records. The first was England's highest-ever score by a wicketkeeper, which he took over from fellow Surrey gloveman Alec Stewart, who scored 173 against New Zealand in 1997. He also surpassed the highest score ever for England in a Test match by a No.7 batter, overhauling KS Ranjitsinhji who held the record for 128 years.
