England vs India, Leeds, day five: Why are players wearing black armbands?

Players were seen wearing black armbands before walking out in the first session, a gesture to honour Dilip Doshi, who passed away in London on Monday night, aged 77. They also observed a moment's silence before the start of the day's play.

Known for his classical left-arm bowling style, Doshi made a significant mark in international cricket. He claimed 114 wickets in 33 Test matches, including six five-wicket hauls. In ODIs, he took 22 wickets in 15 appearances, maintaining an impressive economy rate of 3.96. Apart from representing India, Doshi also had a notable first-class career of 238 games, playing for teams such as Saurashtra, Bengal, Warwickshire, and Nottinghamshire.

Roger Binny, BCCI president, paid tribute to Doshi: “It is with deep sadness that we learn of the passing of Dilip Doshi. He was a true artist of spin bowling, a gentleman both on and off the field, and a dedicated servant of Indian cricket. His impact on the game was immense, and he inspired a generation of cricketers with his skill and dedication. His contribution to Indian cricket will always be remembered. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and the entire cricketing fraternity during this difficult time."

This is the third day when both sides are wearing black armbands in the ongoing Test. On the first day, the players paid homage to the victims of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, where 270 people unfortunately lost their lives.

On day three, they made a similar gesture, paying tribute to England and Gloucestershire quick David ‘Syd’ Lawrence, who was the first British-born Black cricketer to play for the country.
