India will enter this tour with a squad full of changes, following a couple of massive retirements in the form of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli – meaning they will need a new captain, new opener and new No.4. Adding to the atmosphere of change is the bowling attack which has had to contend with the retirement of R Ashwin during India's last Test series, and the unsure fitness status of pacer Mohammed Shami.

The BCCI announced an 18-man India A squad earlier this month, which will take on England Lions in two four-day matches before playing against the main Indian team. There are multiple candidates to take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill is thought to be the frontrunner, with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah also reportedly in the frame at least as a short-term option. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant could also be a candidate.

All these questions are set to be answered when the squad is finally announced, which is expected to be by this weekend. Here are the updates on the situation.
