During the Old Trafford Test between England and India, Jasprit Bumrah conceded 100-plus runs in an innings for the first time in his career.
As England continued stretching their first innings lead past 300 on day four, Bumrah reached an unwanted milestone. Of the 91 times he has bowled so far in Test cricket, the innings in Manchester was the first time he has conceded over 100 runs. He reached that mark off the first ball of the 142nd over when England captain Ben Stokes guided a round-the-wicket delivery through point for a single.
His previous worst figures in terms of runs conceded were 4-99 against Australia in the fourth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar trophy in Melbourne. This time though, Bumrah only had two wickets to show to his name, finishing with figures of 2-112.
Overall, India's bowling looked flat through the innings with several tactical calls being questioned by pundits and fans alike. Among the criticisms were the visitors' choice to hand the new ball to debutant Anshul Kamboj instead of Mohammed Siraj, as well as the late introduction of Washington Sundar into the attack, despite him proving to be the pick of the bowlers.

Stuart Broad also suggested Bumrah could have bowled more regularly from the Brian Statham End, as the former England seamer believed this might have made him more effective. While Bumrah did bowl a considerable number of overs from that end, he only claimed his first wicket in the 125th over, dismissing Jamie Smith (9) late on day three when England already held a 157-run lead.
Before that, he left the field briefly after bowling just one over with the second new ball. Upon returning, he had to serve a penalty period until after tea before being permitted to bowl again. Reports emerged of him having slipped on the stairs, leading to an ankle niggle which prevented him from bowling full tilt.
Notably, Bumrah's new-ball numbers in this series haven't been impressive. The Manchester innings also marked only the second time Bumrah has bowled more than 30 overs in an innings - the previous instance being in 2021 against England in Chennai, where he delivered 36 overs for 3-84.
