England's Joe Root moved past Ricky Ponting on a second list during the Old Trafford Test on Friday (July 24), for most scores of 150 or more.
England began day two of the fourth Test against India at 225-2, 133 runs behind the visitors' first-innings score. Ollie Pope and Joe Root ensured a wicketless morning session, which saw England just 26 runs in arrears at that point.
In the course of that session, Root recorded his 104th 50-plus score in Test cricket, the second-most of any player. He also moved past Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis to become the third-leading run-scorer in Test cricket. After lunch, Root scored his 38th Test century, and shortly before tea overtook Ricky Ponting on the all-time run scorers' chart, meaning only Sachin Tendulkar sits above him now.
In the evening session, England's No.4 went past 150, off 246 balls, but was dismissed two deliveries later, stumped off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja. By then, however, with his 16th score of 150 of more, Root had overtaken Ponting for the second time on the day. The two had been tied on 15 150-plus scores before this innings.

Root is now joint-fifth for the most 150-plus scores in Test cricket, behind Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Kumar Sangakkara and Don Bradman, and level with Mahela Jayawardene. Twenty-two players have made at least 10 scores of 150 or more, with Root and Kane Williamson (11) the only active players on that list.
