Chris Woakes’ brave decision to bat with a dislocated shoulder on the final day of the Oval Test went in vain, as England fell just six runs short against India.
The day began with England needing 35 runs with four wickets in hand to clinch the series. India started aggressively, with Mohammed Siraj dismissing the last recognised batter, Jamie Smith (2), before trapping Jamie Overton lbw for 9. Prasidh Krishna then removed Josh Tongue, reducing England to 357-9 – still 17 runs short of their target.
Before the final day’s play, Joe Root confirmed that an injured Woakes was prepared to "give it all" if needed to bat. He also revealed the injured all-rounder had taken throwdowns in the nets on day four, readying himself in case he was required.
The quick wickets prompted Woakes to bat with his right arm in a sling, drawing a rousing ovation as he walked to the crease. Notably, England had been a batter short in their first innings, as Woakes didn’t bat.
The innings ended in a thrilling fashion with Siraj bowling out Gus Atkinson for 17, giving India a narrow six-run victory. Woakes didn’t face a ball as Gus Atkinson took the strike entirely during the 10-run last-wicket stand. Woakes was seen grimacing while running between the wickets.
