England and India are set to face off in a three-ODI series, starting July 14. Here’s how the men’s ODI team rankings stack up ahead of the first match.
With the 2027 World Cup fast approaching, the qualification race is heating up. The top eight teams from the ODI team rankings, plus the hosts, will qualify directly for the tournament in South Africa next year, while the others will have to take the qualifiers route.
With South Africa, in fourth, automatically qualifying as the hosts, Bangladesh, currently ninth in the rankings, are holding onto the last automatic qualification spot. England are just ahead of them in eighth. West Indies, meanwhile, are tenth and will need a run of wins to overtake Bangladesh.
The Caribbean side started their ongoing ODI series against New Zealand with a win, which gave them a three-point boost and took them even closer to Bangladesh on the rankings, with just seven points separating the two now. England, meanwhile, hold a six-point lead over the Asian side.
The difference between England and Bangladesh was just two points earlier, but Bangladesh went down to lower-ranked Zimbabwe 2-1 in a three-ODI series earlier this month, which has given England some breathing room. Their rating points will get a bigger boost if they manage to defeat India, who are the top-ranked side in the men’s ODI rankings.
