England racked up 400 runs in the first ODI against West Indies at Edgbaston on Thursday (May 29), without any batter scoring a hundred.
Put in to bat, the new opening pair of Ben Duckett and Jamie Smith added 64 in seven overs for the first wicket. Joe Root (57 off 65) and new captain Harry Brook (58 off 45) got half-centuries as well, before Jos Buttler and Will Jacks made a couple of 30s around Jacob Bethell, who starred with a 53-ball 82, taking England to 400-8 in 50 overs.
What records did England break against West Indies?
In what was a complete team effort, England broke multiple batting records. This became the very first instance of each of the top seven batters scoring 30-plus in an ODI innings. This was also the 15th time four England batters made 50-plus scores in the same ODI.
It is also the first instance of a team scoring 400 in ODIs without any individual hundreds. The previous highest ODI total without a hundred was South Africa's 392-6 against Pakistan in 2007. Jacques Kallis was South Africa's highest scorer then, with 88.
England's previous highest ODI total that did not include a hundred was 365-9, interestingly coming in a run-chase of 399 against New Zealand. Eoin Morgan top-scored for England with 88 off 47 balls, but England lost that game by 13 runs according to the D/L method.
Overall, this was he 28th men's ODI innings where 400 was breached. South Africa have done it the most number of times (8), followed by India (7) and now England (6).
For West Indies, it was the fifth time they conceded 400 in a men's ODI – the most often any team has done so in the format. Australia, Netherlands, and Sri Lanka are joint second having conceded 400-plus thrice each.
