India Women produced a commanding performance to register a 102-run win over Australia Women in the second ODI of the three-match series at Mullanpur.
Smriti Mandhana leads the way with record hundred
Opting to bat first, India were led by a brilliant knock from Smriti Mandhana, who struck 117 off 91 balls, laced with 14 fours and four sixes. India scored 70 for the first wicket, with Pratika Rawal contributing with 25, before being dismissed in the 12th over. None of the other top four batters made more than 25, but Mandhana held one end up, bringing up her 12th ODI ton in just 77 deliveries.
It was the fastest ton in the format against Australia, and she is just 197 runs away from becoming the first woman to score 1,000 ODI runs in a calendar year. She is also just four tons away from registering the most hundreds in women's ODIs. The current record belongs to Meg Lanning, who scored 15 tons.
She was dismissed in the 33rd over, on 117 off 91 deliveries, but Deepti Sharma (40 in 53) and Richa Ghosh (29 in 33) ensured the run rate never dipped. A quick 18-ball 24 from No.9 Sneh Raha took India closer to 300, eventually finishing on 292 all out with one ball left.
In reply, Australia never recovered from early blows. Georgia Voll was dismissed for a duck, and it quickly became 12-2 as captain Alyssa Healy fell to Kranti Goud in the fifth over. Ellyse Perry top-scored with 44, but her dismissal in the 25th over tilted the contest firmly in India’s favour. Annabel Sutherland (45 off 42) tried to revive the chase, yet wickets fell at regular intervals. They were eventually bowled out for 190, losing their last seven wickets for 82 runs. Goud was the star with the ball, picking up 3-28 in 9.5 overs, while Deepti bagged 2-24 in an all-round show.
The series is tied 1-1, with the third ODI set to be played on September 20 (Saturday) in New Delhi.
Australia's largest defeats in women's ODIs (by runs)
It is the first time Australia have lost an ODI by over 100 runs. This was also only the fourth time India won a women's ODI against Australia after batting first. Interestingly, the last time this happened was eight years back in the semi-final of the 2017 Women's World Cup, when Harmanpreet Kaur played one of the greatest World Cup knocks ever, scoring 171* (115).
