The IPL match on May 8 between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals has been abandoned 'as a precautionary step'. Here's what we know about the situation so far.

PBKS vs DC match abandoned amid rising India-Pakistan conflict

Midway through the first innings of the game at Dharamshala, one of the floodlight towers went out, halting the game. Not long afterwards, it was confirmed that the game had been called off as a 'precautionary step', according to IPL chair Arun Dhumal, speaking to IANS: "Yes, the match has been called off as a precautionary step, because there are some incidents which happened in Jammu I believe. That's what we got to know, so we thought it’s wise to call off the game."

Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated swiftly, ever since India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam terror attacks of April 22.

May 11 clash at Dharamshala shifted to Ahmedabad

There had been a cloud over this game before it began, with suggestions that any IPL matches scheduled in Dharamshala, situated close to the India-Pakistan border in the north-west of the country, could be moved out of the venue.

The IPL confirmed on May 8 through an official statement that the next match in Dharamshala, Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians on May 11, would instead take place in Ahmedabad while the May 8 fixture would go ahead as planned. In fact, arrangements had also been made for a special pre-match programme at the ground featuring singer B Praak.

After the abandonment, there were reports of an emergency meeting among BCCI officials, but board secretary Devajit Saikia put those to rest: "Fake news. We are in different locations, and the only concern was the Dharamsala match, which we have decided to call off. There is no emergency meeting taking place. Let's avoid spreading rumours."

The BCCI has reportedly arranged special trains to transport IPL personnel, including players and broadcasters out of Dharamshala. Flights are not a viable option, as the city was one of the first to have its airports shut yesterday, in the wake of the military action from both India and Pakistan.

No update on PBKS vs DC game yet

Understandably, there is no clarity yet on what the official result of this game is, and whether there is a possibility of a resumption from the interruption point or the match being played from the beginning at an alternate date.

Earlier on May 8, the Pakistan Super League also saw a disruption to its schedule – today's scheduled match between Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi was postponed indefinitely.
