IPL 2025 is set to resume on Saturday (May 17), with the remaining 17 matches to be played across six venues.
A statement released by the BCCI late on Monday (May 12), said: “The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is pleased to announce the resumption of the TATA IPL 2025. After extensive consultations with government and security agencies, and with all the key stakeholders, the Board has decided to proceed with the remainder of the season.”
IPL 2025 to resume on May 17
The BCCI release went on: “A total of 17 matches will be played across 6 venues, starting May 17, 2025, and culminating in the final on June 3, 2025. The revised schedule includes two double-headers, which will be played on two Sundays.”
The tournament was suspended following the rising tension in military conflict between India and Pakistan after a terrorist attack last month in Pahalgam. A ceasefire was agreed over the weekend (May 10), de-escalating the crisis.
The cities set to host the remaining IPL matches are: Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad, with the play-offs set to begin on May 29 and the final to be hosted on June 3. There are no confirmed details as of yet for the play-off and final venues.
The double-headers are scheduled to be played on May 18 (Rajasthan Royals v Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals v Gujarat Titans) and May 25 (Gujarat Titans v Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad v Kolkata Knight Riders). With the new final date set as June 3, the IPL will finish nine days later than originally scheduled, with the previous final date being May 25.
While the tournament is now set to resume, there is still the possibility that it will be shorn of its marquee overseas players, many of whom flew home when the tournament was suspended. It was reported today that Mitchell Starc may not fly back to India for the remainder of the tournament, while Kagiso Rabada and Sherfane Rutherford were reportedly training with Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad today.
The new schedule for the tournament also includes a replay for the Punjab Kings v Delhi Capitals match which was abandoned after 10 overs on May 8. That match will be played again on May 24 in Jaipur. The clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders will be the first of the new schedule.
