Kartik Tyagi of the Kolkata Knight Riders was allowed to continue bowling despite delivering two waist-high no-balls in the last over against the Lucknow Super Giants.
Kartik Tyagi bowls two no-balls but completes spell
Kolkata Knight Riders posted 155-7 at the Ekana Stadium after Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and opted to field. Mohsin Khan (5-23) had reduced KKR to 93-5 before Rinku Singh (83 not out in 51 balls) took them to a competitive total.
Aiden Markram (31 in 27) and Pant (42 in 38) took the hosts to 65-1, but they soon slid to 129-7, but Himmat Singh and Mohammed Shami kept them in the hunt. When Tyagi began the final over, LSG needed 17.
Shami got a bye off the first ball. Tyagi’s next ball came chest-high at Himmat, who used the bat to protect himself. The umpires rightly ruled a no-ball and warned Tyagi.
Tyagi’s next ball was another full-toss, and the umpires ruled a no-ball for height again. KKR reviewed the decision, but the umpire’s decision turned out to be correct. Despite bowling two full-tosses above waist height, however, Kartik was allowed to bowl after some confusion on the field.
Clause 41.7.1 of the IPL PLaying Conditions states: “Any delivery, which passes or would have passed, without pitching, above waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease, is to be deemed to be unfair, whether or not it is likely to inflict physical injury on the striker. If the bowler bowls such a delivery the umpire shall immediately call and signal No ball.
However, Clause 41.7.3 adds: “If the umpire considers a non-pitching delivery, or a series of non- pitching deliveries, to be dangerous under 41.7.2 when the ball is dead, the umpire shall repeat the No ball signal to the scorers and then caution the bowler, indicating that this is a first and final warning. The umpire shall also inform the other umpire, the captain of the fielding side and the batter of what has occurred. This caution shall apply to that bowler throughout the innings.”
While both balls were illegal, the umpires deemed that only the first of them was “dangerous”. Thus, Tyagi was allowed to continue bowling.
The game was tied after Shami hit the last ball for six. In the Super Over, Sunil Narine took two wickets in three balls for one run. Rinku then hit a boundary off the first ball to seal the game.
