Shamyl Hussain wallops 21-ball fifty on PSL debut

The second match of PSL 2026 saw Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators face off at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Quetta captain Saud Shakeel won the toss and put Karachi in; they made 181-7 on the back of Moeen Ali's unbeaten 48 and knocks of 35 and 30 respectively from David Warner and Saad Baig.

Shakeel opened the batting in the chase alongside 21-year-old Shamyl Hussain, who was playing his first PSL game. Off the second ball he faced, he punched Mir Hamza through cover, before flicking the left-arm quick disdainfully for six four balls later. Hassan Ali was next in the youngster's sights, as he went down the ground for four and over midwicket for six.

Shamyl collected a third six off Shahid Aziz, before the sixth over saw him hit Hamza for three fours and a six, the latter bringing up a rapid half-century, off 21 balls. Three balls later, he holed out off the bowling of off spinner Salman Agha.

Having been part of the Islamabad United squad in previous seasons, Shamyl was retained for 84 lakh rupees by Quetta for the 2026 PSL season. That came on the back of a stellar domestic season in which he scored 899 runs in nine Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches, and 452 runs in nine President's One-Day Cup outings. Across last November and December, he also reeled off six consecutive fifty-plus scores across formats.

He opened the batting for Pakistan at the 2024 U19 World Cup, returning 151 runs at 30.20 and scoring one half-century. Runs have been a feature of his career since age-group level; in the 2020-21 season, he made 291 runs in six games at Pakistan's U16 national-level tournament. In Pakistan's Junior League in 2022-23, Shamyl finished as the fourth-highest run-getter before impressing for Pakistan Shaheens at the Top End T20 series in July 2023.
