Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan both registered ducks on day one of the new Ranji Trophy season.

Prithvi Shaw registered a duck on his Ranji Trophy debut for Maharashtra on Wednesday (October 15).

Prithvi Shaw falls for duck as Maharashtra make horror start

At the Sports Hub International Cricket Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, home side and last season's finalists Kerala won the toss and chose to put Maharashtra in to bat.

Discarded India prodigy Prithvi Shaw took strike in his first professional match for Maharashtra, since moving from Mumbai ahead of this season. He played for the team in the Buchi Babu invitational tournament, and scored a century in a warm-up match earlier this month.

Just four balls in, though, Shaw was on his way back to the dressing room. Kerala quick MD Nidheesh got a delivery to jag back in and rap Shaw on the front pad, trapping him plumb in front for a duck.

The very next ball, Nidheesh had Siddesh Veer caught behind, reducing Maharashtra to 0-2. Nedumankuzhy Basil then made it 0-3 as he dismissed the other opener, Arshin Kulkarni, for a golden duck in the following over. By the time Basil removed Ankit Bawane, it was 5-4, with all the runs thus far coming from wides. Strangely, Maharashtra's first scoring shot was a six from wicketkeeper Saurabh Nawale.

At 18-5, Jalaj Saxena came out against his former side, to attempt rescuing the innings alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Shaw won the U19 World Cup as India captain in 2018, having made his first-class debut for Mumbai a year earlier. He also bagged an IPL contract with Delhi Daredevils that year, and went on to score a century on Test debut that October.

However, his form at both international and domestic level faded away, and combined with disciplinary issues, he lost his place in Mumbai's squad before making the shift to Maharashtra.

Even last week, Shaw was involved in a heated altercation with Mumbai's Musheer Khan. Today, Musheer opened the batting for Mumbai, the spot Shaw used to occupy, but suffered an almost-identical fate with a three-ball duck against Jammu and Kashmir.
