Armaan Jaffer plays a stroke

Armaan Jaffer, nephew of former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer, hit consecutive hundreds during the third round of 2025-26 Ranji Trophy.

Armaan Jaffer hits highest first-class score

Batting first against Sikkim at Anand, Mizoram lost opener Sahil Reza for a duck. That brought Armaan to the crease. The batter dug in, bringing up his fifty off 86 balls. Then he upped the ante, reaching his hundred in another 53 balls and hitting 12 fours and a six. The century didn't satiate his thirst for runs, as he marched on to a 252-ball 178, adding six more fours to his tally.

Armaan received support from Codanda Ajit Karthik (54 off 39) and KC Cariappa (58 off 31). Mizoram finished their first innings on 424, with Kranthi Kumar taking 4-75 for Sikkim.

It was Armaan’s second successive first-class hundred in the competition, and his 178 also marked a career-best effort, surpassing his previous highest of 144 against Arunachal Pradesh in the second round.

      Who is Armaan Jaffer?

Armaan is the nephew of former India Test opener and highest-ever Ranji Trophy run-getter Wasim Jaffer.

He first made headlines when he smashed 498 for Rizvi Springfield School against IES Raja Shivaji School in the Giles Shield tournament in Mumbai in 2010-11 – then the highest individual score in Indian school cricket.

The record was later surpassed by Prithvi Shaw’s 546 in 2013-14, before Pranav Dhanawade’s unbeaten 1009 in 2015-16 set a new benchmark that still stands as the highest in minor cricket. In 2013, Armaan reinforced his appetite for big scores with another monumental knock of 473 for Rizvi Springfield High School.

He was part of the same India Under-19 batch as Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, and Washington Sundar, and was a member of India’s title-winning campaign at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup.

Later that year, he made his senior professional debut for Mumbai. He started with a duck in his maiden first-class innings and has been inconsistent. He entered the current match with 913 runs in the format at an average of 33.81 from 16 matches. However, in List A cricket, his numbers are better – 546 runs at an average of 42 and a strike rate of 82.85 – while he has featured in one T20, scoring a 16-ball 27 against Maharashtra in the 2016-17 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Armaan, who began his career with Mumbai, was slated to represent Puducherry in the 2025–26 season. However, his contract was reportedly terminated after he refused to take part in the pre-season one-day and multi-day inter-state tournaments – until Mizoram came to his rescue with a deal.

"It’s a big relief for us that Armaan has found a team in Mizoram. Otherwise, he would’ve missed the entire 2025–26 season. Cricket is a religion, the first love of our family, and we’re glad he’ll be able to play as a professional for Mizoram," Armaan’s father and coach Kalim Jaffer told Mumbai Mirror in October.

Mizoram are part of the Plate group of the Ranji Trophy, along with Bihar, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Jaffer's first two outings for them this season - which also happen to be his first first-class outings in nearly three years - have seen him score big hundreds. Mizoram, who currently top the Plate group table, would be hoping he continues in similar fashion.
