Vaibhav Suryavanshi of India bats during the 2nd Youth ODI match between England U19 and India U19 at The County Ground on June 30, 2025 in Northampton, England

In a rapid batting display, Vaibhav Suryavanshi fell just seven runs short of his maiden first-class century on day four of the Ranji Trophy 2025–26 third round.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi hits maiden first-class fifty

After no play was possible on the first two days in Patna, Meghalaya made 408 for 7 before declaring their first innings. Ajay Duhan (129) and Swastic Chettri (94) were the chief contributors, while an unbeaten 62-ball 60 from No.9 Akash Chowdhary added valuable lower-order runs.

Bihar got to bat only 25 overs on the final day, but that was enough for the swashbuckling southpaw Suryavanshi to leave his mark on the match. Playing in his free-flowing style, he brought up his fifty off just 33 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes. It was his first fifty-plus score in first-class cricket; he had come into the match with only 114 runs from 11 innings at an average of 10.36 since making his debut in January last year.

Having finally found his rhythm in the format, Suryavanshi continued to press on the accelerator and looked well set for his maiden century. As luck would have it, he fell for a 67-ball 93, adding three more fours and two sixes. Bihar were 156-4 when the match ended in a draw.

At 14, Suryavanshi continues to impress

Suryavanshi’s rise has been nothing short of sensational. He first caught the eye in September last year, smashing a 62-ball 104 on his Youth Test debut for India against Australia.

But it was the IPL that turned him into a household name. At just 14 years 23 days, he became the youngest player ever to debut in the league – and announced himself in stunning fashion by hitting a six off his very first ball. Just two games later, he hammered a 35-ball century, the second-fastest in the tournament’s history. Later this year, he added another record to his growing list, becoming the fastest centurion in Youth ODIs.
