The umpires had to intervene to separate Prithvi Shaw and Musheer Khan in a Ranji Trophy warm-up fixture between Mumbai and Maharashtra.
Ahead of the 2025/26 Ranji Trophy, Maharashtra are hosting Mumbai for a three-day warm-up match in Mumbai. Shaw, who had played for Mumbai until last season, switched to Maharashtra from 2025/26. He got a hundred in his first match for his new team, at the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament in August.
Joining Shaw at Maharashtra is domestic giant Jalaj Saxena, who used to play for Madhya Pradesh and, until last season, Kerala. Mumbai, meanwhile, are led by Shardul Thakur, and feature the likes of Shivam Dube.
Prithvi Shaw hits 181 before getting embroiled in controversy
Opening the batting with Arshin Kulkarni, Shaw raced to his hundred in 140 balls, leg-glancing Thakur to reach his hundred. Kulkarni, who had scored at an even quicker rate, fell for a 139-ball 186 (33 fours, four sixes) in an opening stand of 305.
Shaw continued until 181 in 220 balls (21 fours, three sixes) before attempting a slog-sweep off Musheer and holing out to Irfan Umair at deep mid-wicket. It was an excellent innings, but things went downhill after the dismissal.
It is not clear what words were exchanged between Shaw and his former teammates, but it ended in a fiery confrontation. Siddhesh Veer, the non-striker, tried to pacify the opposition fielders as the umpires intervened to put an end to the matter.
With Veer also scoring 60, Maharashtra eventually declared on 465-3 after 81 overs of batting. At stumps, Mumbai were 23-1 in seven overs.
