Glamorgan opener Asa Tribe scored a fighting hundred to keep England Lions barely afloat in their ongoing unofficial Test against Australia A at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

Australia A declared their first innings at 588-8, with a lead of 422, just over nine overs into day three of the unofficial Test. Dropped Australia Test opener Nathan McSweeney top-scored with an unbeaten 226.

The second innings didn’t start well for the Lions, who lost openers Ben McKinney and Tom Haines, and the No.3 James Rew, with just 29 runs on the board. Fergus O’Neill accounted for all three of the wickets. That was when Jacob Bethell, who is part of the senior men’s squad for Ashes 2025/26, and Asa Tribe, batting at No.5, joined hands. Tribe opens the batting for Glamorgan in the County Championship, and scored a double-century towards the end of the season in September this year as they secured promotion from Division Two.

The duo batted for 44.1 overs to score 169 runs together before O’Neill made Bethell his fourth victim of the innings. The southpaw scored 71 runs, hitting seven boundaries during his knock. Ben Kellaway followed Bethell to the pavilion just seven deliveries later.

But Tribe went about his job, trying to take the game into the last day, and completed his third first-class century. Thomas Rew played a handy knock of 47, only to be dismissed in the penultimate over of the day. The former remained unbeaten on 114 off 172, with Matthew Finisher, who held on for eight balls by stumps on day three, for company. At 274-6, the Lions are still 148 runs behind Australia A and will require a monumental effort on the last day to take something out of the game.

Tribe has picked up form again to add to the 53 not out during the tour game against the Australia PM XI last week. Earlier this year, he had registered consecutive scores of 122*, 131*, 175, 53* and 206 across formats for Jersey and Glamorgan.
