Jason Holder last played an ODI for the West Indies in July 2023, and finishes with 159 wickets and 2237 runs from 138 matches in the format.
On a special episode of The Scoop Extended, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy revealed that Holder has retired from ODI cricket when asked about the all-rounder's future with the team. His last match in the format was against Scotland in the 2023 World Cup Qualifier when their hopes of qualifying for the tournament proper were crushed.
Holder hasn’t played Test cricket either since the home series against South Africa in August 2024. However, Sammy insisted that he is in the plans for the longest format of the game. Holder has been actively playing franchise cricket over the last couple of years, even as he has featured for the West Indies in T20Is.
“Yes, Jason is still in the mix for Tests. I know he's retired from ODI cricket,” Sammy said. “He has spoken about his interest, but obviously you know he's a franchise player as well. So, it's us talking about, you know, availability, where he fits, but yeah, he's made it clear that he's still interested in Test cricket.”
Jason Holder finished his ODI career with 159 wickets at an average of 36.96 with two five-wicket hauls. He scored 2237 runs at an average of 24.85 with 12 fifties to his name. He also led the West Indies in 86 ODIs, including the 2015 and 2019 World Cups, registering 24 win, 54 defeats, two ties, and six no-result games.
Sammy opens up on West Indies’ challenge to qualify for World Cup 2027
Notably, the West Indies' last appearance in the ODI World Cup came back in 2019 when Holder was captain. They failed to qualify for the 2023 edition when, like in 2019, only 10 teams participated. With 14 teams allowed for the 2027 edition, the Caribbean side are vying for automatic qualification for the tournament, which isn’t easy.
Hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have already qualified, and the top eight highest-ranked teams in the ICC men’s ODI rankings as of March 31, 2027, will make the cut for the World Cup. West Indies are ranked tenth in the latest update and will at least need to be ninth by the cut-off date.
Sammy understands it won’t be easy for the Caribbeans to qualify but wants the team to win as many matches as possible, starting from the series against New Zealand that starts today.
“I'm looking forward especially to this ODI series,” Sammy said. “We know we're trying to get that qualification spot. You know, it's a little bit tricky right now. But we could only control the things that we have in front of us. So our job right now is to try to win as many games as possible heading up leading up to that cutoff point for automatic qualification.”
