The Women’s Big Bash League 2025 game between Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes was abandoned after the ball was mistakenly rolled into the pitch, creating a hole.

A stray throw from Amanda-Jade Wellington during the mid-innings fielding practice led to the ball getting stuck under the roller, which was then in use, at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide. The ball was pressed into the pitch, as a result, and created a wedge.

The freak accident altered the playing conditions for Hobart, who were due to begin their chase. Subsequently, the officials decided to abandon the game as no play was possible despite the curator’s efforts to smoothen the wicket, with captains Tahlia McGrath and Elyse Villani accepting the call.

Adelaide had batted first in their home game, Madeline Penna top-scoring with a 51-ball 63. Bridget Patterson (24 off 12) and Jade-Wellington (8 off 3) finished the innings strongly to take their side to 167-4 in 20 overs just as rain came in.

The brief shower delayed Hobart’s chase, which eventually didn’t start at all. This was Adelaide Strikers’ second game in a week that was abandoned in bizarre circumstances after a no-result against Sydney Thunder on November 28 at the Adelaide Oval.

Syndey Thunder stopped one shot away from a win

In a rain-truncated five-over game, Sydney were one shot away from a win, needing just three runs off 13 deliveries when the umpires decided to stop play as rain returned. The commentators, notably, claimed that showers didn’t get any heavier over the last 15 minutes of proceedings, questioning whether the officials erred in calling for the covers.

With the game already having lost 30 overs due to rain, the umpires didn’t think there was enough time left to wait for the rain to relent, and the match was called off.

The Adelaide Strikers are sixth in the WBBL table with three wins, defeats and no results each – a total of nine points in nine games. The Sydney Thunder are seventh with seven points after nine matches. While Adelaide can still get into the playoffs with a win in their last league game, Sydney are now out of contention. Hobart Hurricanes, meanwhile, sit at the top with 15 points on the back of seven wins, two losses and an abandoned game, and will host the final on December 13.
