A 2-1 series win helped New Zealand gain ground in the ongoing WTC cycle, while England slipped further.
New Zealand become first team since 2012 to win three-Test series in England
England had won the first Test, at Lord’s, by 115 runs, but New Zealand hit back at The Oval with a 253-run triumph.
At Trent Bridge, the only Test of the series outside London, Tom Latham (151) and Devon Conway (157) put on 317 for the first wicket, but England recovered well to bowl them out for 438. Despite Ben Duckett’s 113, however, England folded for 354.
Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten 100 helped New Zealand set a target of 373, an innings during which England captain Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket. Reduced to 116-6 early on the final morning, England took the score to 191-6 before folding for 212.
The win made New Zealand the first team to win a series of three or more Tests against England in England since South Africa in 2012.
