Dilshan Madushanka bowls Sri Lanka to victory with final over hat-trick

In the first of two ODIs at the Harare Sports Club, the hosts elected to field first. Sri Lanka were dealt an early blow, with the departure of Nishan Madushka in the 5th over, for a 13-ball duck. Pathum Nissanka (70) anchored the innings, before a 137-run sixth-wicket stand between Janith Liyanage (70*) and Kamindu Mendis (57) lifted them to 298-6.

Zimbabwe lost two wickets in the first over of their chase, as Asitha Fernando got rid of Brian Bennett first ball, and the returning Brendan Taylor for a three-ball duck. Thereafter, Ben Curran and skipper Sean Williams repaired the damage with a 118-run stand. After Williams' dismissal, they slid to 161-5, bringing Tony Munyonga to the wicket alongside Sikandar Raza.

They needed 138 off exactly 20 overs at that point, and the pair brought the equation down to 10 runs needed off the final over, giving them the chance to become only the second team in men's ODI history to successfully complete a run-chase after being reduced to 0-2.

Raza stepped across his stumps to scoop the first ball from left-armer Dilshan Madushanka, but missed and the quick took out his middle stump instead. Next ball, new batter Brad Evans tried the same. He connected, but not well enough as the ball lobbed up to short fine leg for a simple catch. With Zimbabwe now needing 10 off four, new batter Richard Ngarava attempted a slog, and saw his stumps pegged back.

A single off the next ball brought the set Munyonga on strike, but Madushanka squeezed in a yorker to deny him anything, and reduce the requirement to nine off one ball. Munyonga got a single, and Zimbabwe fell short by seven runs.

Madushanka is the eighth Sri Lankan man to take an ODI hat-trick, after Chaminda Vaas (twice), Lasith Malinga (thrice), Farvez Maharoof, Thisara Perera, Wanindu Hasaranga, Shehan Madushanka and Maheesh Theekshana.
